What is the Hart House Film Board?

The Film Board is a Hart House club that helps its members make movies through teaching filmmaking in workshops, lending out advanced, professional film & video gear and more! Buy a membership for $25 at the Porter’s Desk on the main floor and borrow video cameras, lighting and mics, as well as get discounts on workshops and much, much more! More information to become a member and other important details is available at the membership FAQ page.

Quick FAQ

How do I become a member?

Just drop by the HUB on the first floor of Hart House anytime and buy a membership. Some of our gear needs certification, so read the question titled, “How do I borrow gear?” Sign up for our email newsletter at www.hhfilmboard.com and you’ll stay in touch about great things happening around the Film Board.

How do I borrow gear?

Our advanced (read: better) gear requires certification. There’s three ways to get this certification: attend a Certification Tutorial or demonstrate competence and experience of the gear. Then go over to our Equipment Request Form and fill it out. Wait for us to respond to your request and drop by and pick up the gear.

Certification Tutorials are run on an on-demand basis in the summer. Please email equipment@hhfilmboard.com with your full name and interest in a certification tutorial. Once four people have signed up, you will be emailed to attend one. In the meanwhile, you can get a quick overview on a single piece of gear if you arrive early during office hours when it isn’t particularly busy.

What about the edit suites?

Drop by during office hours for an overview of how to use the edit suite and ask us to make an account for you. Then sign up on the front door of the Film Board office for a time to use a particular computer. Then drop by the Porter’s Desk and trade your membership card for a key that will let you into the edit suite. The Edit Suite is available almost all the time the House is open. Keys must be returned to the desk at 11:30 the same day they are borrowed.

How about the Super 8?

Super 8 is an old gauge of film primarily used by amateurs (but should not be thought of as an amateur format). Check out the Super-8 FAQ for info on Super 8. For other questions, camera purchases or DOP/Cinematography work, contact Rick Palidwor.

How do I get involved?

The Film Board is a volunteer-run organization so we’re always looking for volunteers. Email tc@hhfilmboard.com with your interest and we’ll get back to for an informal interview about your skills and how they could best be used at the Film Board. Certain volunteer tasks qualify for reduced-rate or free equipment rentals.

Other than gear, training and friendliness, what else do you offer?

The Film Board sponsors screenings of student made films, limited grants, the New Filmmaker’s Project and the Farm Project. The New Filmmaker’s Project and the Farm Project are collaborative projects made by our members of all skill levels which are screened at our screenings.

Film Board members can also get access to shooting space at Hart House. Please contact tc@hhfilmboard.com for more information.

Certifications for Advanced Equipment

Certification Tutorials will be held periodically throughout the fall. These tutorials are MANDATORY for new members who wish to use the advanced video, audio, and lighting equipment. To sign up, you can send an email to equipment@hhfilmboard.com or come in person to sign up on the wall next to our doors.

EQUIPMENT CERTIFICATION IS MANDATORY BEFORE YOU CAN USE ADVANCED VIDEO, LIGHTING, ANDAUDIO PRODUCTION EQUIPMENT.
