Literary & Library Committee

The Literary & Library Committee at Hart House manages and maintains the Library collection, organizes monthly readings featuring a wide range of authors, plans WRITuals, a monthly literary pub in the Arbor room, organizes annual Literary and Poetry Contests and publishes the annual Review. The Committee also oversees bi-weekly Sunday meetings of the Algonquin Square Table, a collection of student authors, poets and UofT's literary elite.

WRITuals

The WRITuals series of literary pub nights in the Arbor Room at Hart House are held on the last Tuesday of every month. WRITuals brings audiences a wide range of authors, poets and spoken-word artists; past appearances have included established artists such as Adrienne Weiss, Afua Cooper, book launches for Canadian publishing companies such as Broken Pencil and up-and coming talent on the UofT campus. Library Readings

The Hart House Library plays host to a number of author readings every year; past appearances have featured internationally-renowned artists such as A.L. Kennedy, Margaret Atwood and Michael Ondaatje. If you would like to get involved and help Hart House showcase a wide range of talented authors, contact us at 416.946.7323.

Hart House Review

The Hart House Review, which features selected works of fiction, poetry, photography and art by Hart House members, is published annually by the Literary & Library Committee.

Submission deadline for 2008-2009 is Midnight, Friday, December 31st, 2008. Submissions must be e-mailed along with a completed submission form to: harthousereview@gmail.com.

Algonquin Square Table

An informal gathering and workshop of UofT poets and authors, meetings of the infamous Algonquin Square Table feature some of the sharpest wit and brightest talent on the UofT campus since the days of Dorothy Parker. Contests

The 27th Annual Hart House Literary Contest

Submit your short fiction piece of no more than 3,000 words to the Hart House Hall Porters Desk by Midnight, January 9th, 2009. The contest is open to all Hart House Members in good standing, (Students at all levels of study, Senior or Joint Plan members), excluding judges and professional writers of fiction and non-fiction, i.e. those who have earned more than $1000 for their writing. The winning stories will be published in the Hart House Review. The winning authors will be announced at the Hart House Review Launch and contacted by the Hart House Literary and Library Committee in April 2008. All entrants will be invited to the Review Launch and Awards Presentation evening which will take place in April. Please email: harthouse.contests@utoronto.ca with any questions. Word limit: 3000.

The Hart House Poetry Prize

Submit your poems (or groups of poems) of no more than 250 lines to the Hart House Hall Porters Desk by Midnight, January 9th, 2009. The competition is open to all Hart House Members in good standing, (Students at all levels of study, Senior or Joint Plan members), who have not published a book of poetry or the equivalent of 48 pages or more, perfect bound. The winning poems will be published in the Hart House Review. The winning authors will be announced at the Hart House Review Launch and contacted by the Hart House Literary and Library Committee in April 2008. All entrants will be invited to the Review Launch and Awards Presentation evening which will take place in April. Please email: harthouse.contests@utoronto.ca with any questions.
