The Farm
Seasonal Events
Enjoy a helping of Hart House's delicious maple syrup atop a stack of pancakes, celebrate the summer solstice around a roaring campfire, press apples to make cider or enjoy some winter sports! These experiences and many more are await you at the four seasonal organized events offered by the Farm Committee, each of which have become a much-loved part of the Hart House Farm tradition. Information about the specific times, costs and dates for each of these events can be obtained by contacting: 416.971.2343 or farm.harthouse@utoronto.ca
Sugaring Off: Saturday March 19, 2011
Early spring weather conditions each March permit the Farm's maple bush to produce a rich supply of sap. Watch the process of "boiling down" the sap in the evaporator at the sugar shack. The Farm's famous maple syrup can be enjoyed with all-you-can-eat pancakes. Sugaring Off makes the most of the spring thaw. Maple syrup made at the Farm can be purchased at The HUB all year round and is also used in the Gallery Grill.
Midsummer's Eve
As the only overnight event of the year, Midsummer's Eve each June offers an opportunity for a longer stay at the Farm. Among the more popular activities are swimming, hiking and outdoor sports. Evening festivities include a bonfire, musical entertainment, fireworks, and a rare chance for a clear view of the night sky. Bring your tent if you want to sleep outside under the stars.
Cider and Song
Pressing apples to make cider is a popular activity in October. This is one of the most picturesque times to visit the Farm, as the colours of the autumn foliage are spectacular. One may enjoy a scenic hike around the Farm, or simply relax by the sauna and the ponds.
Winter Carnival
Although January snow may be hard to appreciate in the city, winter at the Farm is a refreshing occasion to fully enjoy the season. Recreational activities (weather permitting) include cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, skating, winter sports and an invigorating sauna. Please bring skis, snowshoes and/or skates.
Facilities
Cradled in the Caledon Hills on the ridge of the Niagara Escarpment, the 150 acres of the Hart House Farm is the perfect place for any form of retreat...and only 1 hour from Toronto.
A place for relaxation, special events, conferences and seminars
Among the maple sugar bush and cleared fields, a well-trodden path will take you on a two-hundred-foot descent through a unique limestone ecology to the palisade. At the base of this cliff, you will discover a Finnish-style log sauna adjacent to the most scenic of three quarry ponds. Stay for the day or overnight at the Hart House farm. The rustic and welcoming Ignatieff House has a fully equipped kitchen, central heating, washrooms, a piano and a cozy fireplace. Bring your own sleeping bag and find a spot in the guest bunks. Or enjoy the outdoors and pitch a tent.
A place to perform, think, and connect
In the autumn of 2011, the Hart House Farm welcomed the Dry Stone Walling Association of Canada to create two spectacular large stone structures—entirely without mortar. A 100-year old wall was restored and expanded and now surrounds the area with the beauty of natural stone. The multi-use Amphitheatre was built as an open-air venue available for musical performances or hosting lectures and other events. Contact us to discuss how to book your event.
