Hart House Heraldry Design Contest

Call for Proposals

The Hart House committee is calling for artists and designers to propose a new heraldic shield to reflect the Hart House vision.

Winning design will be awarded a prize of $1000, and a runner-up prize of $250.

A selection of entries will be displayed at Hart House and posted on the Hart House website. The competition will be adjudicated by a jury representative of the House.

Submission Requirements:

• Must reflect the new vision and mandate of Hart House (see below)
• Dimensions: 10 ¼ x 11 ⅝
• Submit either
  • to-scale drawing (not larger than 11" x 14” format) at the HUB; or
  • digital file submitted by email
• Indicate colour and relief specifications
• Short description or explanation (100-200 words) of the concept

Hart House Vision
Hart House is a living laboratory of social, artistic, cultural and recreational experiences where all voices, rhythms, and traditions converge. As the vibrant home for the education of the mind, body and spirit envisioned by its founders, Hart House encourages and supports activities that provide spaces for awakening the capacity for self-knowledge and self-expression.

Details: The shield will be mounted amongst a sequence of shields in the Debates Room. The design and symbol will reflect the Hart House vision or a critical aspect of it and be in keeping with the context of the existing shields, many of which draw their symbols from nature—a rose, wheat sheaf, stars—and appear to in honour of European newcomers to Canada.

Actual production and implementation of the sign will be undertaken by a specialist according to the artist’s instruction and in keeping with the overall program and format of the existing shields.

Only the winners will be notified. If materials are to be returned by mail please include a self-addressed and stamped envelope.

The committee reserves the right not to implement the project.
